Anyone starting a clothing label faces the same early decision: build production in-house, or work with a manufacturer. In Indonesia the second route is known as makloon<\/em>, and internationally as CMT \u2014 cut, make and trim, where the manufacturer handles production and you keep the brand and the design.<\/p>\n

For most growing brands the second option is the more sensible commercial choice, for four reasons.<\/p>\n

1. Capital stays in the business, not in machinery<\/h2>\n

Running your own line means buying machines, maintaining them, hiring and training operators, and carrying that payroll whether or not you have orders that month. With CMT, production is a cost per unit agreed up front. Your capital stays available for the things that actually grow a clothing brand \u2014 design, inventory and marketing.<\/p>\n

2. You can choose a partner that fits the product<\/h2>\n

Manufacturers are not interchangeable. Some are built for knitwear, others for tailored shirting, others for denim with heavy wash processes. Being able to choose means matching the factory to what you are actually making, rather than forcing your product through whatever equipment you happen to own.<\/p>\n

3. Experience reduces the cost of mistakes<\/h2>\n

An established manufacturer has made most of the mistakes already. They will tell you when a fabric will not behave the way your design assumes, when a construction detail will cause problems at scale, and when a specification is going to be expensive for no visible benefit. Production faults are also the manufacturer’s responsibility to put right \u2014 a meaningful transfer of risk when you are working with thin margins.<\/p>\n

4. You get to concentrate on the brand<\/h2>\n

Production is absorbing. Left to itself it will take all of your attention \u2014 and it is not the part of the business that differentiates you. Customers do not choose a label because of who owns the sewing machines. Handing production to a partner buys back the time to work on the things they do choose you for.<\/p>\n

What to look for<\/h2>\n

Ask about capacity, certifications, and whether the factory has produced your kind of product before. Ask to see test reports. Ask what happens when something goes wrong \u2014 the answer tells you more than the price list does.<\/p>\n
