Cotton<\/h2>\n<p>The default, and deservedly so. Cotton is skin-friendly, absorbs moisture well, and holds up to repeated washing without creasing badly.<\/p>\n<p>It is worth being precise here: cotton is a fibre, not a construction. Shirting cottons are woven, and the two most common weaves behave differently. <strong>Poplin<\/strong> is the lighter and smoother of the two; <strong>twill<\/strong> is heavier with a visible diagonal line, and drapes more substantially. Both wear well \u2014 poplin reads crisper, twill reads more formal.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Oxford<\/h2>\n<p>Popular for school and office shirts. Oxford is cotton blended with polyester, woven in a basketweave that gives it a fine dotted texture. The result is thin, smooth and soft.<\/p>\n<p>One caution: oxford is more vulnerable to tearing than drill, and it stiffens if washed with too much detergent. Drill<\/h2>\n<p>The workhorse of uniform shirting \u2014 a diagonal weave with a strong yarn interlock, available in pure cotton or blended. Durable enough for field use, smart enough for the office, which is why so many corporate uniforms end up here.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Tropical<\/h2>\n<p>A polyester\u2013cotton blend weighted towards cotton, so it stays cool while resisting creasing better than pure cotton. Softer to the touch and more expensive \u2014 a common choice where the uniform is part of how the organisation presents itself.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Canvas and baby canvas<\/h2>\n<p>Also in the cotton family, but considerably thicker and heavier. Full canvas suits field use where abrasion resistance matters. <strong>Baby canvas<\/strong> is the lighter version \u2014 thinner and more comfortable, still strong \u2014 and is the one that works for office shirts.<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing<\/h2>\n<p>Start with the wearer and the climate, not the price list.
