It tells you how substantial the material is, and it lets you estimate how much fabric a given order will consume \u2014 useful well before production starts.<\/p>\n<p>One point that catches people out: with yarn counts, a <em>higher<\/em> number means a <em>finer<\/em> yarn. That inversion is part of why fabrics of the same name can differ in weight.<\/p>\n<h2>How it is measured<\/h2>\n<p>Because a piece of fabric can be any size, weight is expressed as mass per unit area \u2014 <strong>grams per square metre (gsm)<\/strong>, or ounces per square yard in some markets. GSM is the standard almost everywhere and the one to specify.<\/p>\n<h2>What affects it<\/h2>\n<p>Fabric weight depends on the thickness of the yarn, the density of the weave or knit, and the fibre composition. It is a reasonable rule of thumb and it is not reliable. Durability also depends on drapability, flexibility, softness and construction \u2014 a well-constructed lighter fabric can outlast a poorly made heavy one.<\/p>\n<p>Treat GSM as one specification among several, not as a quality score.<\/p>\n<h2>Using it in practice<\/h2>\n<p>Lighter fabrics suit hot conditions and office use, where comfort matters more than abrasion resistance.
