Of everything that determines whether a uniform is comfortable and durable, fabric weight is the most quantifiable — and the most commonly left unspecified. It is worth understanding before you order.
What fabric weight is
Fabric weight is the relationship between a fabric’s mass and its area. It tells you how substantial the material is, and it lets you estimate how much fabric a given order will consume — useful well before production starts.
One point that catches people out: with yarn counts, a higher number means a finer yarn. That inversion is part of why fabrics of the same name can differ in weight.
How it is measured
Because a piece of fabric can be any size, weight is expressed as mass per unit area — grams per square metre (gsm), or ounces per square yard in some markets. GSM is the standard almost everywhere and the one to specify.
What affects it
Fabric weight depends on the thickness of the yarn, the density of the weave or knit, and the fibre composition. Dyeing and printing also change it — a finished fabric will not weigh exactly what the greige fabric did.
The common misconception
Heavier is widely assumed to mean more durable. It is a reasonable rule of thumb and it is not reliable. Durability also depends on drapability, flexibility, softness and construction — a well-constructed lighter fabric can outlast a poorly made heavy one.
Treat GSM as one specification among several, not as a quality score.
Using it in practice
Lighter fabrics suit hot conditions and office use, where comfort matters more than abrasion resistance. Heavier fabrics suit field and industrial work, where the uniform takes physical punishment.
The practical advice is simple: put the GSM in your specification. Ordering “drill” without a weight leaves one of the most consequential decisions to someone who does not know your working conditions.
