Choosing a factory for a bulk order is a decision you live with for months. Sample quality tells you what a factory can do on its best day with one garment; it tells you very little about what happens across five thousand.
Five checks worth making, most of which cannot be done over email.
1. Visit, in person
There is no substitute. Walking a factory floor tells you things no document will — how the place is organised, how the work is handled, how people are treated, whether the environment looks like one that produces consistent work. If a factory is reluctant to have you visit, treat that as the answer.
2. Look at the size of the workforce
A garment factory produces at a scale a small workshop cannot, and that depends on having enough machines and enough people, each doing a defined part of the process. Check the headcount against the volume and timeline you need — the arithmetic either works or it does not. While you are there, look at actual stitching on the line rather than the sample they hand you.
3. Ask about history and experience
How long have they operated? What have they produced? Who did it go to, and where? A factory that has made your kind of product before will anticipate problems yours will otherwise discover in production. Track record is the closest thing to a guarantee available.
4. Test professionalism, not politeness
Everyone is courteous while quoting. What matters is discipline against deadlines, because a bulk order that arrives late has usually missed the season it was made for. Ask how they handle delays, and how quickly they tell you. Manufacturers who answer that question specifically are the ones who have thought about it.
5. Check price against the market, not against hope
Price matters, but the useful question is whether it is realistic. A quote well below the market is not a bargain — it is a signal that something will be reduced later, usually quality or delivery. A good manufacturer prices to what the work actually costs, so neither side ends up resenting the arrangement.
